Rangers FC midfielder Steven Davis won't allow Old Firm agony define club's title hopes

Northern Ireland captain Steven Davis is determined Rangers’ Old Firm defeat to Celtic doesn’t define the Ibrox club’s title hopes this season.

Odsonne Edouard and Jonny Hayes were on target as Steven Gerrard’s men lost the first derby tussle of the campaign 12 days ago.

It ended a 12-game unbeaten run for Rangers this season and eased their Glasgow rivals three points clear at the top of the table.

Fresh from winning his 113th cap for Northern Ireland against Germany in a 2-0 defeat at Windsor Park, Davis is eager to get back to winning ways.

Rangers return to league action when they host Livingston on Saturday before kicking off their Europa League group campaign at home to Feyenoord next Thursday.

“The Celtic defeat was a major disappointment,” said Davis.

“But what we must do now is pick ourselves up and not let it affect us moving forward.

“We have a lot of big games coming up, but every week is a big game at Rangers and everyone knows the pressures and demands of playing for the club.

“There is still a long way to go in the season and we have a lot of things to play for. We have to make sure it was only a setback and kick on.”

Davis is relishing the prospect of this season’s European adventure.

Gerrard’s men are drawn in the same pool as Dutch club Feyenoord, BSC Young Boys of Switzerland and Portugese giants FC Porto.

“It will be a tough group, but one I think everyone at the club will look forward to,” said Davis.

“We will relish the battles ahead.

“The squad as a whole is a lot more competitive. It’s looking strong but we need to make sure we keep improving.

"With the games we have in Europe and everything else, the manager is going to have the option to change things around and freshen the team.”
