Rangers fans told to get test as 'small number' contract coronavirus after breaching lockdown

Rangers fans who attended title celebrations in Glasgow have been told to get a coronavirus test after a number contracted coronavirus.

Jillian Evans, head of health intelligence at NHS Grampian, said there may be a further increase in cases across the Glasgow area in the coming week after large crowds gathered in George Square and outside Ibrox.

The health chief also encouraged those who have spent time with people who were at the celebrations to be "vigilant" and book a covid test as well.

Yesterday Chief Medical Officer Gregor Smith announced that a "small number" of supporters had returned positive tests following the title celebrations.

Speaking on Good Morning Scotland earlier today, Jillian said: "I think the advice would be if you were in that situation or part of those crowds, get tested.

"That would be an important thing you could do to try to minimise any further harm.

"We may still see the result of transmission in the coming week.

"I know the numbers in Greater Glasgow and Clyde did go up last week but it may be too soon to say whether that was the result of crowding in that situation.

"It was outdoors, that was good but lots of people were shouting close-by so that's not good. It's not the behaviour we want to encourage at any point right now.

"The public health message from that would be, if you were around that or with people who were around it then being vigilant and being tested in community testing would be a good thing to do right now."

The cases identified following the celebrations came as First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warned about a "slight increase" in people testing positive across Scotland.

The First Minister said she could not rule out a link between transmissions rising and the limited reopening of primary schools in recent weeks.

But she welcomed "significant evidence" which proved the success of the on-going vaccination programme in reducing deaths and illness caused by coronavirus.
