Rangers fans on transfer tenterhooks as Steven Gerrard holds Alashkert big reveal hopes

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has revealed it should be a matter of "days and hours" before he's able to announce a mystery midfielder at Ibrox.

The Premiership winners are looking to strengthen in the final weeks of the window and it's the Ibrox engine room that the manager has identified as needing reinforcements.

Gerrard is preparing to take on Alashkert in Europa League qualification and while the signing will come too late for that fixture tomorrow night, he's hopeful of being able to impart the juicy details before or just after that crunch tie.

He also hinted the new man is someone capable of operating at the base of his midfield trio in the same manner as Ryan Jack, whose injuries towards the tail end of last season saw him miss the title run-in.

Gerrard said: "The progress is really good, it's strong.

"I'm hoping to have some news in the coming days, but until it's done and dusted it's very hard to give you an exact time and date.

"I'm hoping for more positive news in the coming hours, maybe some time tomorrow.

"Maybe we'll have something to say around tomorrow's game – we'll just have to wait and see. But I don't want to get too carried away or ahead of myself as well.

"We've got a couple of players that are capable of dropping down and playing as hybrids, if you like.

"But it is an area where, come the end of the season after the amount and volume of games, we felt we were short at times.

"We did ask Glen Kamara, Steven Davis and Joe Aribo to go above and beyond, and they did that.

"But I don't want to be as vulnerable as I was towards the back end of the season, I do want to have options, I do like top players in each position and if we can get this signing over the line in the coming days then I'll be really satisfied."

Gerrard, however, wouldn't be drawn on whether it was a loan deal or a permanent signing.

"We'll have to wait and see," he added.
