Rangers fans locked out for Celtic clash as no away supporters to be present for second derby showdown

Rangers fans will be locked out when their side visit Celtic on January 2 – as the Parkhead club respond to the lack of away fans at the first derby meeting of the season.

For the first meeting between the city rivals it was initially planned that there would be 700 visiting supporters at Ibrox.

However, due to red zone restrictions at Celtic Park the Parkhead club were unable to guarantee that would be reciprocated.

As a result Rangers withdrew the allocation and Celtic have now followed suit for the second Old Firm game of the season.

A question and answer session with fans which was attended by acting CEO Michael Nicholson saw the board quizzed on away tickets for the fixture.

And it's understood they were told that visiting fans will not be permitted at Parkhead for what is sure to be a top of the table clash.

However, Celtic are believed to be open to returning to a reciprocal approach after that match on January 2.

The decision is the latest in a series of controversial decisions involving away fans at Celtic Park and Ibrox.

In 2018 Rangers cut the allocation for their Glasgow rivals to around 800 as they cited an increase in season tickets sold.

That was followed in kind by Celtic, with both teams now getting under 1,000 for the derby.
