Rangers fans leave huge piles of rubbish and broken bottles in George Square after lockdown flouting title celebrations

Rangers supporters left piles of rubbish in Glasgow city centre yesterday after fans flouted lockdown rules to celebrate winning the league.

Thousands of joyous supporters descended onto George Square despite a warning from Police Scotland not to gather in large crowds after Celtic failed to beat Dundee United, handing Rangers the Scottish Premiership title.

Pictures showed chaotic scenes as red, white and blue smoke bombs and fireworks were let off members of the chanting crowd celebrating at 55th league title.

After the group dispersed a huge clean-up mission was launched after piles of broken glass and rubbish was left by the supporters.

A video filmed by a passer-by captured the devastation left by supporters as the clean-up mission went on through the night.

Hundred of glass bottles were discarded smashed on the ground alongside cans of beer and Dragon Soop.

Benches at George Square were also smashed up by the fans during a night of mindless celebration while the country battles the pandemic.

Nicola Sturgeon blasted the fans who took to the streets in droves, branding the scenes “infuriating and disgraceful”.

The First Minister said: "Everyone has made so many sacrifices in the past year and seeing a minority risk our progress is infuriating and disgraceful.

“It is deeply unfair to the entire country, and the police have a hard enough job already. Please ask fans to go home Rangers FC.”

This morning, Police Scotland confirmed that 28 people were arrested while a further seven were issued with fines.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow Division, said: "Despite the coronavirus regulations and the prohibition of gatherings, our officers were faced with a very difficult set of circumstances as many thousands of supporters gathered to celebrate across a number of different venues.

“Our priority was public safety and this included reducing the risk of disorder, road safety and effective crowd management among the complexities of a vociferous crowd. This included established crowd control measures to prevent serious disorder in multiple areas and protect the public.

“In total, 28 people were arrested and seven people were issued with fixed penalty notices or will be the subject of a report to the Procurator Fiscal."
