Rangers fans in Rutherglen bring traffic to a standstill with fireworks display to celebrate title win

Rangers fans in Rutherglen brought traffic to a standstill yesterday as they let off fireworks in the middle of a busy road.

With the Ibrox side officially clinching the Scottish Premiership title after Celtic were held to a 0-0 draw at Dundee United - meaning Steven Gerrard's side could not be caught - Gers fans in many parts of the country took to the streets to celebrate the club's 55th league title win in their history.

Fans crammed into Glasgow's George Square and not too far from the city centre, fans in Rutherglen celebrated the club's success with a fireworks display on a dual carraigeway.

Supporters could also be seen on a pedestrian footbridge above letting off flares, as police attended the scene.

It's the first time in 10 years the Light Blues have claimed the Championship, bringing an end to their arch rivals' dominance over the last decade.

Earlier in the day, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon pleaded with fans not to attend large gatherings and stay home amidst the Covid-19 pandemic, fearing celebrations could 'risk lives'.

She tweeted: "I congratulate Rangers FC on the title win & recognise what a moment this is for fans.

"But gathering in crowds just now risks lives, and could delay exit from lockdown for everyone else.

I congratulate @RangersFC on the title win & recognise what a moment this is for fans. But gathering in crowds just now risks lives, and could delay exit from lockdown for everyone else. If those gathering care at all about the safety of others & the country, they will go home. https://t.co/MjzJJEhhsd
