Rangers fans have Covid vaccine passports checked at Ibrox ahead of Hibs clash

Football fans have been pictured having their covid vaccine passports checked at Ibrox for today’s big SPFL game between Rangers and Hibs.

The Glasgow club has said today’s match would be a “test event” for the scheme, which has been brought in across Scotland to only allow fully vaccinated people into some large events and nightclubs.

It means football clubs with home attendances of 10,000 people or more will need to provide a “reasonable number” of checks at the turnstiles.

But Rangers have said no supporter will be turned away from today’s match after the rollout of the app suffered issues when it launched on Friday.

The Scottish government said previously there will be no legal enforcement of the rules until October 18, in order to give venues a chance to test the checking procedures they have in place.

Pictures taken outside Ibrox on Sunday afternoon show a number of fans holding up their phones for stewards to view their vaccine certificates as they enter the ground.

In a supporter update issued on Friday, Rangers said: "After further engagement with the Scottish Government, we can confirm that although we are being encouraged to use this game as a “test event”, no supporter will be refused entry.

“We apologise for the inconvenience regarding this confusion which has been beyond our control."

The announcement followed Aberdeen also shelving plans to require vaccine passports this weekend.
