Rangers fans handed fixed penalty notices as cops make arrests at gatherings across Glasgow

Cops have made several arrests after hundreds of Rangers fans gathered in masses around Glasgow to celebrate the club winning the Scottish Premiership.

Officers have handed out fines as thousands of supporters flocked to George Square and Ibrox - breaching current coronavirus guidelines.

Arrests were made over minor incidents or disorder and the use of pyrotechnic devices in the crowds.

Cops will continue to police ongoing gatherings in the city and fans are currently being escorted away from Ibrox.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow Division, said: “We are continuing to police the ongoing gatherings of football supporters in both George Square and outside Ibrox stadium today.

“Public safety remains our utmost priority and I would again remind fans that, in line with the current Scottish Government Coronavirus guidelines, all gatherings are currently restricted.

“Officers have made a small number of arrests and issued fixed penalty notices for breaches of the coronavirus restrictions, minor incidents of disorder and the use of pyrotechnic devices.

“We will continue with an appropriate policing response, as officers engage with those present, explain and encourage them to comply with the restrictions. Where appropriate, we have moved to enforcement and will continue to do so.

Rowdy fans gathered to set off red, white and blue flares at preplanned gatherings after Rangers scooped up the premiership title for the first time in a decade.

Fireworks were set off by supporters in George Square as large crowds chanted football songs.

Nicola Sturgeon publicly condemned their actions and urged fans to go home.
