Rangers fans fundraise to replace damaged memorial benches in George Square

Rangers fans have launched fundraising appeals to replace memorial benches damaged in George Square during their 55th league title celebrations yesterday.

Thousands of supporters gathered in the city centre yesterday to mark winning the Scottish Premiership in what the First Minister described as "infuriating and disgraceful" scenes that she warned could jeopardise the easing of lockdown.

Twenty-eight were arrested and a further seven issued with fixed penalty notices or will be reported to the Procurator Fiscal.

The force said action was taken for offences including assaulting police officers, breaching coronavirus regulations, disorder, use of flares and sectarian breaches of the peace.

A council clean-up mission was launched through the night after piles of rubbish, broken glass and empty booze bottles were left behind.

More than £9000 has so far been raised across two GoFundMe campaigns after a number of memorial benches were damaged in the square.

Appeal founder Robert Marshall wrote: "During these celebrations, there appears to have been accidental damage to a small number of memorial benches in George Square. This, whilst clearly unintentional, is not something the Rangers Support would like to have seen done and as a result, we are fundraising to replace these benches as a true and sincere gesture of respect."

He said excess funds from that GoFundMe will be donated to blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan.

Both appeals can be viewed here and here.
