Rangers fans descend on Ibrox as title party resumes at club stadium

Rangers fans have made their way back to Ibrox to celebrate after officially becoming Premiership champions.

The Ibrox club were confirmed as league winners when Celtic drew 0-0 with Dundee United meaning they couldn't match Rangers' points tally so far this season.

And after sparking an incredible atmosphere on Edmiston Drive on Saturday before and after the 3-0 win over St Mirren, supporters were back on the street again.

The fans are breaking lockdown rules and the Scottish Government were critical of them for attending yesterday but it hasn't stopped them returning today.

Decked out in red, white and blue, many of them are letting off pyro and enjoying themselves as they celebrate a first league title in a decade.

It's been an incredible journey for many of the Rangers fans who have witnessed their side play in the bottom tier of Scottish football within the last decade.

Yesterday, Steven Gerrard admitted that he couldn't blame them for taking part in the celebrations but urged them to stay safe.

He said: “I’ve got to get my words right here - we are still experiencing and are involved in a pandemic.

“So it’s important that fans try to stay safe.

“That’s the priority – fans’ safety and people’s safety. I totally understand that.

“But at the same time, if you’ve got anything inside your heart, you will understand what the fans have been through.

“You can totally understand what’s gone on outside this stadium.

“It’s my job to try and control that and safety is paramount at the moment.

“But it’s tough because it has been an emotional three years for me.

“The fans have been here much longer than that, they've been through a lot in 10 years. So you can certainly understand it.

“We heard the rumours about how it could be when we turned up at the stadium today. That can take you to an emotional place, a real high.

“Some of my new players haven’t seen the supporters yet, so it was a big eye-opener for them.

“But I had a good idea what it would be like. The day I turned up here on May 4, 2018, I didn’t expect 8000 fans who had to be brought inside for safety reasons.

“So I had an idea that once we got that first big success together - which was always going to be the hardest - what the reaction would be like.

“During a pandemic, you think maybe it wouldn’t be like it was today.

“But what you saw today is 10 years of what these supporters have been through.

“I’m delighted for them and really proud of the players’ efforts because they have been outstanding.

“From a league point of view, they have been close to perfect.”
