Rangers fans brim with Europa League confidence but one punter fears an imminent Celtic catastrophe - Hotline

Rangers suffered a late blow in Leipzig and are not heading straight in to an early Sunday showdown with Celtic with the Premiership crown on the line.

The big games keep coming thick and fast but Gers fans are not giving up on the European dream – or on holding on to the title.

Eddie Easson, Ballingry, said: “A good result for Rangers and still all to play for. Massive game on Sunday do they go for it?

“Of course they will, they have to. To surrender their title to Celtic would be catastrophic.”

John Bruce, Glasgow, said: “Most Rangers fans would have taken a 1-0 defeat, as it would have kept us in the tie.

“The Germans are in for an assault on their senses next week when they visit a packed and noisy Ibrox and discover that Rangers are still very much in this.”

Joe Graham, Garrowhill, said: “Once again European Rangers carry the flag for Scotland. A magnificent result in Germany not only ups the coefficient but looks more likely advancing themselves to a European Final.

“They must be favourites now to finish the job under the Ibrox lights with the home support proving too much for the visiting Germans.”

Eric Hay emailed: “This game is definitely not over yet. Word is Kemar Roofe will be fit alongside Aaron Ramsey. The team performed well without a recognised top striker. I'm optimistic of a win next week.”

Lewis Fotheringham, Mount Ellen, said: “I had to laugh at Gordon Ashley's claim that no one cares about European semi finalists.

“Can I remind him that it has been Rangers' European performances over the last couple of years that has boosted Scotland's coefficient.

“Meanwhile, Celtic embarrassed themselves in Europe this season by getting knocked out of every continental competition.”

Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, said: “Rangers have made everyone proud even if they don’t reach the final. Scottish pundits should give them credit.”

Meanwhile Scott Gowers, Edinburgh, said: “A Leipzig player was clearly offside and in the eye-line of McGregor.

“What’s the point in having VAR when the official operating it doesn't know the rules or just wants to use the technology in a one sided manner.

“The tie is far from over but this mistake by the officials hopefully doesn't come back to haunt Rangers.”

Jimmy Murray, Edinburgh, said: “Had to laugh at the newspaper saying John Kennedy had given Leipzig info on how to beat Rangers.

"The same Kennedy who managed Celtic when they were hammered 4-1 by Rangers.”

Celtic fans reckon Rangers are about to get finished off in two competitions.

Tam Williamson, Lanarkshire, said: “Rangers think they are still in the tie but the upcoming thumping that awaits them at Celtic Park will put them on a downer for the return leg. The Gers fans who were planning for the trip to Seville can at least now book a sunshine week in Blackpool instead.”

James Kennedy, Kilsyth, said: “To date this season Rangers have won hee-haw and I confidently predict that by this time on Sunday they will be clinging on to the hope of winning the Scottish Cup to double their trophy-winning achievements in the past eleven years to TWO. Brilliant.

“Vorsprung durch technik!”

But David Bryce, Troon, said: "Celtic must not lose the Old Firm game on Sunday. Back to back defeats, after Gers have played on the Thursday before the games, will be deemed totally unacceptable.

“I’d play Gioukoumakis instead of Kyogo to give us a much needed physical threat. I’d also have Bitton in ahead of Hatate.”
