Rangers fans BANNED from Lyon city centre as French police crack down amid 'provocation' fears

Rangers fans have been warned by police to stay out of Lyon city centre ahead of their Europa League clash on Thursday.

The Ibrox side travel to France on Thursday for what is effectively a dead rubber with both teams already qualified for the round of 32.

But 3,000 Rangers fans are still expected to travel and give Gio van Bronckhorst 's side their backing on the road.

- Only 2,000 of those have tickets although another thousand or so fans are expected to travel.

But the match clashes with Lyon's famous Festival of Light, which dates back to 1643 and attracts up to half a million visitors to the city every year.

Now the Police Prefecture of Rhone has issued a decree banning all Rangers fans from the centre of the city.

And they have warned about trouble if Rangers fans gain access to the home sections of the stadium.

It stated: "An artistic event of international scope attracting up to 500,000 visitors will take place at the same time as the match.

"This event, which is held in a still very high terrorist context, mobilises a large number of security and rescue forces.

"It is expected that 3,000 Scottish supporters could make the trip to Lyon to watch the match. Many of them could also come to support their team with the hope they get a ticket at the last minute and end up in the general public section of the stadium.

"Their proximity in the stands, with Lyon supporters, is likely to generate provocations and incidents.

"Glasgow Rangers supporters will be prohibited from the city centre on Thursday 9 December 2021 from 8 am to midnight.

"Only the 2,000 supporters holding an official ticket from Glasgow Rangers will be allowed access to the stadium."
