Rangers fans arrested and fined as title party continued into the night

Rangers fan gatherings in Glasgow have sparked a number of arrests and fines for alleged 'minor disorder and breaching Covid restrictions'.

Football fans swarmed the city centre after the Govan side won the Scottish Premiership for the first time in 10 years on Sunday.

Large crowds partied in George Square into the night, and at Ibrox over the weekend to let off fireworks and smoke bombs following the win.

Now multiple people have been arrested and allegedly hit with fixed penalty notices for breaking covid lockdown rules, minor incidents of disorder and the use of pyrotechnic devices.

The First Minister called on Rangers FC bosses to ‘send fans home’ after massive groups continued to grow in Glasgow.

She branded the scenes outside Ibrox Stadium and in George Square “infuriating and disgraceful” as hundreds of supporters flouted the current Covid-19 restrictions which ban mass gatherings.

Chief Superintendent Mark Sutherland, Divisional Commander for Greater Glasgow Division, said: “We are continuing to police the ongoing gathering of football supporters in George Square on Sunday, 7 March, 2021.

“Officers have continued to move to enforcement where appropriate with a number of further arrests and additional fixed penalty notices for breaches of the coronavirus restrictions, minor incidents of disorder and the use of pyrotechnic devices."
