Rangers fans and their dinosaur mentality was shown up with tired Steven Gerrard excuse - Hotline

Rangers fans are still smarting from the sudden departure of Steven Gerrard - but the majority are in agreement over who can give them a Gio-up.

It looks like the Ibrox club are ready to go Dutch again with Gio van Bronckhorst having held talks to replace Gerrard.

And Stephen Butler, Glasgow, said: “The appointment of van Bronckhorst would be fantastic. He will know of Dutch players he can bring in and he won four trophies in four years during his spell with Feyenoord. Gerrard had nine shots at all competitions in Scotland and only delivered one, hardly a record compared to Brendan Rodgers.”

Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, is another who backs the Dutchman, saying: “The Rangers support are now saying Stevie Who instead of Stevie G. I do hope van Bronckhorst gets the position, Dutch coaches are rarely bad.”

But Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: “It looks like they'll take the big risk on van Bronckhorst to be the next Rangers boss. He’s not my first preference, the man most likely to continue Rangers’ title ambitions is Frank Lampard.

"Similar to Gerrard he’s a high class midfielder, a good experienced manager who spoke his mind to a billionaire and was sacked.”

The sudden departure of Gerrard and his backroom team has left a bad taste in the mouths of many Gers fans.

But John Bruce emailed: “To all the Rangers fans venting their fury at Gerrard for leaving Rangers - that's not the Rangers way. Of course the timing could have been better, but we all knew that he'd be off to the Premier League sooner rather than later. And it's not as if he's left us struggling in the relegation zone and out of Europe and the cups.

"The team has been stale this season and needed a spark, yet we're still top of the league. So, what a platform for the incoming manager to build from and bring his new ideas - and players - to the champions. Rangers fans can thank Steven Gerrard for what he brought to Ibrox, move on and look forward to the next successful chapter.”

Muir MacKenzie, Alford, added: “I’m sad to see the departure of Gerrard. If I could, I would shake his hand and wish him all the very best. He is a hero to hundreds of thousands of Rangers fans worldwide for helping win their 55th title and needless to say, stopping Celtic winning 10 on the trot.

“He is welcome back at Ibrox anytime. Thanks of course must also go to all his backroom staff and his family who have been behind him all the way. Aston Villa, you are lucky to have him.”

Kevin Lord, Drylaw , reckons the reaction of some fans exposes a mentality problem. He said: “The reason Gerrard left is evident by reading fans’ comments regarding ‘he did what he came in for’. Stopping Celtic winning one league title? That is the dinosaur mentality that will forever hold back Rangers and Celtic.”

Meanwhile, William Hutchison, Aberdeen, said: “Although Gerrard is gone us Celtic fans shouldn't get too far ahead of ourselves. If we do it could come back on us. Just concentrate on our club never mind whats going on at Ibrox.”

Ninety-nine point nine per cent of the Scotland fans were clearly still too busy celebrating Friday’s win in Moldova to get in touch.

Thankfully there was a sole Tartan Army trooper speaking for them all.

Andy Kirkpatrick, Cambuslang, said: “Well done Scotland. Five wins on the bounce and a play-off spot for the World Cup. Steve Clarke might not be everyone’s cup of tea but you’d be mad to question his record. It’s great being a Scotland fan again .. roll on Monday night at Hampden under the lights.”

Amen to that Andy.
