Rangers fan starts Neil Doncaster removal petition as thousands call for SPFL chief to leave

A Rangers fan has started a petition to have Neil Doncaster removed from his role, attracting more than 5,000 signatures so far.

The SPFL chief executive has come under fire for his handling of the coronavirus crisis, with a resolution to end the lower leagues early in limbo after Dundee didn't cast a vote.

That proposal would also have granted the governing body the power to end the Premiership season in the same manner at a later date, handing the league title to Celtic.

That has proved controversial, with Rangers calling for Doncaster to be suspended and for an independent investigation into the SPFL.

And it appears fans are looking to ramp up the pressure, with one setting up a petition to the SFA to have Doncaster removed.

The fan who set up the petition accuses the SPFL head of being "a shambles and a disgrace to Scotland".

The petition was only set up on Saturday afternoon and five hours later had attracted 5,000 signatures.

Rangers slammed the governance of the league body as “farcical” and claimed an “undemocratic culture” has existed in the organisation “for far too long”.

But the SPFL blasted back with a statement of their own.

Chairman Murdoch MacLennan said: It is extremely concerning that Rangers have chosen to make a number of very serious allegations against the SPFL, its corporate governance, its culture, its office-bearers and its business operations.

“In the often-heated atmosphere of Scottish football, rumour and misinformation can very quickly reach fever-point.

“However, allegations of a lack of even-handedness and fair play go to the very integrity of the league and I would expect Rangers Interim Chairman Douglas Park to present compelling evidence to back up his claims, or to withdraw them.

“I anticipate that the SPFL Board will convene early next week to discuss a wide variety of issues and I will be writing to Mr Park asking him to urgently communicate any and all information he possesses in order that the board can take whatever steps are necessary.”
