Rangers fan hits a Celtic nerve as debate rages over ultimate Hoops trump card - Hotline

The SPFL are on to a promise with money man James Anderson but punters are already either spending the cash or wondering what the deal will cost them.

The Edinburgh fund manager and Hearts fan has pledged a couple of million to help clubs through the coronavirus crisis – but it could end up like weans at a wedding scramble.

John Williams, Paris, said: “I don’t think that the money offered by James Anderson is enough to save all 42 clubs in the SPFL. It would be better kept as an emergency fund to be used by the clubs who really need it.

“Clubs like Celtic and Rangers and other big clubs in the Premiership don’t need this money. If they can afford to spend £4m and more on players they can survive without a share of this money.”

Kenny Goff emailed: “Ann Budge comes up with someone to invest in football and suddenly Neil Doncaster is talking to clubs about them changing the league setup. We all know what’s coming next. Who in Scotland can trust this man?

“He wants to know why teams don’t want a bigger league but doesn’t this man take no for an answer? They already voted on it, now he’s trying to keep Budge and Hearts happy.”

John Morgan, Armadale, said: “Ann Budge has only one interest in Scottish football – Hearts avoiding relegation. Is this new beneficiary pouring much needed cash into our great game on the condition her club doesn’t go down?

“What happens next year when the league finishes, does the bottom club ask for reconstruction adding another two teams?

“By 2040 we will have a league of 70 teams, playing 20 minutes each way.”

Hotline caller James Thomson hit a nerve by suggesting the Lisbon Lions were fortunate to win the Big Cup.

Alex Paterson, Giffnock, said: “As a Rangers fan I watched the game on TV and saw 90 minutes of patient attacking football getting its deserved reward.

“If Celtic fans still go on about it half a century later, Mr Thomson has had an equal amount of time to get over it.”

John Stewart emailed: “Has Mr Thomson ever watched the final? Celtic totally dominated the game, went down to a dodgy penalty, played the game entirely in Inter’s half and if it wasn’t for Sarti, it would have been 4 or 5-1. They were the first British team to win the trophy so have every right to brag.”

Paul Keenan, via email, said: “The gum bumping from sore Gers fans has got so embarrassing and now someone is gurning about the Lisbon Lions being lucky. Keep them coming Teddy Bears, we just love it.”

Kenny Wilson, Moffat, said: “James Thomson saying Celtic were lucky must be one of the worst comments I’ve ever seen on the Hotline.”

Celtic are still celebrating Nine in a Row but Rangers fans are less than impressed by the exploits.

John Robertson, South Queensferry, said: “I’m fed up listening to Celtic fans going on about their team and 10 in a Row . Not one of their present team would have made the 60/70s team in fact not one them would be good enough to sell programmes.”

John Stewart, Newton Mearns, said: “You’ve got to laugh at Scott Brown and his ‘We’re ready for 10 in a Row’ comments . Does he not realise his team have not won Nine in a Row yet.

“Last I looked they had won eight, with another gifted.”

Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, said: “As a Rangers fan I of course want to win the league next season, but not just to stop 10 in a Row. That means little to me, I just want Rangers to be on top again. But it’ll be a hard job.”

But Michael Edmonds, Northampton, said: “In the four seasons there was no Ibrox Club in the top flight Celtic couldn’t win the treble as hard as they tried. In 2016 enter the Govan Galacticos and Celtic win three trebles in a row and are favourites for a fourth, so it proves that Celtic have found it a lot easier with the Gers in opposition.”
