Rangers fan favourite Josh Windass hails 'incredible' Sheffield Wednesday faithful after notching last-gasp Wembley winner

Former Rangers star Josh Windass has hailed a ‘memorable’ League One campaign as his last-minute winner took Sheffield Wednesday up from the third tier on Monday afternoon.

Windass and his teammates were on the brink of despair after a 4-0 loss at Peterborough United in the first leg of the play-off semi finals earlier this month, but an incredible 5-1 turnaround saw them defeat Posh on penalties, setting up a tense Wembley final with local rivals Barnsley.

An end-to-end game saw extra time beckon, and with the game looking destined for penalties, Windass became the man of the moment when his diving bullet header upended Barnsley keeper Harry Isted in the 123rd minute to seal a glorious promotion to the Championship for the Owls. It was Windass’ 16th goal of the season in all competitions, his most profitable return since the 2017-18 season whilst at Ibrox, gifting Wednesday a return to the second tier at the second attempt.

Noted throughout his career as a player who always pops up with the big goals - including a strike against Celtic for Rangers - Windass has been a revelation since his move to Hillsborough, scoring 30 goals in 98 games for Darren Moore's side as they return to the fold in the Championship. And the Yorkshireman has labelled his teammates and Wednesday’s supporters as ‘incredible’ as he drinks in the adoration of the Owls faithful.

Posting on Instagram, Windass wrote: “Goal 16 was a memorable one, we got relegated because of a points deduction.

“We didn’t deserve to be in this league. We fought every day to get back up, high standards and incredible team spirits. The changing room is full of unbelievable people, and the fan base, INCREDIBLE!!”
