Rangers fan attacked fellow supporter who tried to stop homophobic rant on bus

A thug Rangers fan attacked a fellow supporter who tried to stop his homophobic rant on a supporters’ bus.

Greig Paterson, 33, had been returning to Larkhall, Lanarkshire, after watching Rangers thrash Motherwell 7-1.

As the bus made its journey from Ibrox he launched a homophobic tirade at a woman and a row broke out.

Kenny Riddell, who was with his son, intervened in a bid to resolve the dispute but when he got off the bus, he was attacked by Paterson.

He was left unconscious by the assault that saw
him lose a tooth and left a stone embedded in his head.

Paterson, of Larkhall, went on trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He claimed he acted in self-defence in November last year but was convicted.

He was sentenced to eight months in jail by Sheriff Vincent Smith but was last night released on bail pending a hearing at the appeal court.

In evidence, Paterson claimed he felt threatened but witnesses told the court the victim had been knocked out instantly.

Diarmid Bruce, defending, said the incident had been out of character for the accused.
