Rangers fan, aged 74, will walk a marathon for veterans' charity

A grandad will walk a marathon to raise money for a cause close to his heart.

Jim Clark has signed up to do the virtual Kiltwalk and plans to complete the 26.2mile challenge over three days in September.

The 74-year-old self-confessed Bluenose is raising money for the Rangers Supporters Erskine Appeal (RSEA) to help the charity buy a much-needed electric car.

Renfrew man Jim admitted he’s never taken on a challenge like this before but started walking more during lockdown.

He said: “Under the current conditions, I’ve been walking more instead of taking the car.

“It’s very difficult for all charities to raise money at the moment. All events were cancelled.

“I was trying to think outside the box about what I could do. With me doing a bit more walking, I saw the advert for the Kiltwalk and thought I’d give it a go.”

Jim, who’s a retired shipyard worker and keen bowler at Renfrew Bowling Club, will start his walks on Monday, September 7, and finish three days later.

He and his wife Robina, 72, are both Rangers FC season ticket holders and Jim also holds shares in the Ibrox club.

He’s been involved in the RSEA since it started in 2007 with the aim of bringing some veterans who are cared for by the Erskine charity to Ibrox for a match day experience.

Since then, it’s raised almost £1million for the veteran’s charity with sportsman dinners, bowls tournaments, merchandise, golf events and sponsored walks, cycles and runs.

Jim, who has two sons and five grandchildren, has set himself the target of raising £1,872 – the total is the year Rangers FC was founded – and is already well on his way with around £700 pledged.

He plans to walk three times a day for three days to complete the distance and is already training and upping his daily walks.

He said: “I’ll do all my walks around Renfrew. I’ve got different routes so I don’t get bored.

“I’m going out three times a day at the moment just to build myself up. I’ve never done anything like this before but it’s for a great cause, which I’ve supported for over ten years.”
