Rangers faces and fans gather to pay tribute to Ibrox disaster victims

Representatives of Rangers and fans gathered outside Ibrox to pay their respects to the supporters who tragically lost their lives in the Ibrox Disaster.

Ex-Rangers captain and Honorary president John Greig laid a wreath this morning at the Ibrox Disaster memorial plinth on Edmiston Drive in memory of the 66 supporters who died 49 years ago today on January 2, 1971.

Rev Stuart McQuarrie carried out a short service, with the names of those who died read out by club officials including managing director Stewart Robertson before a minute's silence was observed by those in attendance.

The biggest single loss of life at a Scottish football match, the date will forever be etched in the memory of both Rangers and Scottish football fans alike.

The loss included 31 teenagers, five of whom, Peter Easton, Martin Paton, Mason Phillips, Brian Todd and Douglas Morrison, were from the same village in Fife, alongside nine-year-old Nigel Pickup from Liverpool.
