Rangers face Europa League crossover quirk as Celtic set to discover Champions League qualifying dates

Rangers could face a Europa League fixture quirk requiring them to play three games from two different seasons in just a couple of weeks.

Dutch FA chief Eric Gudde has detailed how UEFA plan to solve an unprecedented scheduling headache.

European football's governing body will reveal all dates for international and European games on June 18, attempting to ease the disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

And Scottish clubs will play their European qualifying games at the end of August, according to Dutch FA director Gudde.

Celtic will be in next season's Champions League, while Rangers, Motherwell and Aberdeen will compete in the Europa League qualifiers.

But Rangers still remain in this season's Europa League and have to play their remaining second leg, last 16 game in Germany against Bayer Leverkusen.

That match has been pencilled in for August 6 and that would mean Rangers being put in the bizarre position of having to play three games in two different seasons in the same competition if the two-legged qualifiers take place at the end of the same month.

Dutch football is trying to persuade their government to allow the sport to return ahead of their planned date of September and KNVB director Gudde pointed out they would be at a huge disadvantage because UEFA plan to play European qualifiers in August.

He said: "We really can't wait until September 1, because I understand UEFA thinks matches will be played in the preliminary rounds of the Champions League and Europa League at the end of August.

"So we need to start up before then. We have to plan as soon as possible for professional and financial reasons. We are not just sitting back waiting for a vaccine, we are exploring all possibilities."

Rangers' first leg against Leverkusen was the last game played in Scotland before the shutdown in March. They are 3-1 down going into the second leg.

UEFA will announce the format of both the Champions League and Europa League competitions on the 18th with suggestions the qualifying rounds could be truncated because of the much-later start next season.
