Rangers face Bayer Leverkusen coronavirus worry as German minister calls for Europa League postponement

Rangers' trip to Germany to face Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League could be under threat after the German health minister called for a postponement.

Jens Spahn wants any event scheduled to have more than 1000 people in attendance to be cancelled as governments across the globe look to combat the developing coronavirus crisis.

Many Rangers fans have already booked flights and accommodation in Leverkusen with only 10 days before the game is scheduled.

And any formal decision will put pressure on UEFA to come up with a resolution.

It's more likely, however, that the governing body would request the game goes ahead with no fans inside the stadium,

It comes after the first death of a German from coronavirus after a 60-year-old passed away earlier this week.

There are almost 850 cases confirmed in Germany and Spahn said: "In view of the dynamic development of the past few days, this should be changed quickly.

"After numerous discussions, I expressly encourage you to cancel events with more than 1000 participants until further notice.

"Because the slower the virus spreads, the better our healthcare system can handle it."

"I am aware of the consequences this will have for citizens or organizers. In the next few days we will talk about how we will deal with the economic consequences.

"But it is clear that health comes first.

"I also encourage everyone: consider what is so important in your everyday life that you do not want to do without it in the next two to three months, be it the club visit, the birthday party in a family circle or the club meeting.

"I trust that in these times the citizens will make wise decisions for themselves and their loved ones, because with this caution we protect above all our older and chronically ill fellow citizens."
