Rangers evening headlines as Steven Gerrard given Kamara transfer advice, Europa League rivals suffer scare

Here are your Rangers evening headlines on Monday, October 19.

Standard Liege hit with covid scare

Standard Liege face an anxious wait after learning three Club Brugge players tested positive for coronavirus after their weekend's match.

Simon Mignolet, Odilon Kossounou and Michael Kremencik all came down with the virus for Brugge after their draw with Liege.

The Belgian side are set to take on Rangers on Thursday night as the Europa League stage gets underway.

But there are fears their squad might be infected with covid-19, but they'll have to wait until Tuesday to get tested ahead of their match with the Light Blues.

Ferguson gives Kamara transfer advice

Barry Ferguson has urged Rangers to tie down Glen Kamara to a long-term deal.

The midfielder, who excelled for the Ibrox side at Parkhead on Saturday, still has over two years left on his deal at Ibrox.

But former midfielder Ferguson insists the Light Blues need to hand him an extension after his string of impressive performances this season.

Rangers signed Kamara for £50,000 from Dundee in January 2019 and Ferguson believes his value has sky rocketed since his move to Ibrox.

He wrote in his Daily Record column: "Glen Kamara was the standout. How on earth was that guy only £50,000? What would you get for that now? That is the deal of the Century.

"I was actually laughing while I was watching the game thinking what a piece of business that was. And he is only going to get better too.

"Stick another two zeros on the end of that £50,000 and you’ll not be close to what he’s worth now.

"It shouldn’t matter what he’s worth though - Rangers need to get him tied down on a new contract asap.

"To be honest I thought Gerrard would have gone with Ryan Jack so it was a surprise to see Kamara start.

"But what a performance, I thought he was exceptional against a very good Celtic midfield of Brown, McGregor and Ntcham.

"He was all over the place and when he got the ball he was composed.

"He goes about his business quietly, keeps the thing ticking over simply but effectively. He doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.

"Kamara came through at Arsenal so has a good footballing background. Then he’s gone to Dundee, done well there to get a move to Rangers and he’s now a Finnish international.

"You don’t do all that if you’re not a good player."

Goldson on how Rangers reacted to Celtic mole

Connor Goldson revealed he got a heads up about Celtic's team news being leaked - but insists the Rangers squad didn't believe it was true.

The Hoops' line-up was released hours ahead of kick-off as Stephen Welsh was handed a shock start instead of Christopher Jullien, with Odsonne Edouard ruled out.

Goldson, who bagged a double for Steven Gerrard's men in a convincing victory at Parkhead, admitted he was alerted about the Celtic mole, but says it didn't change how their side prepared for derby day.

Asked if it was addressed in their pre-match discussions, he told talkSPORT: "We never. Even in our pre-match meeting, we thought Edouard would play and we thought Jullien would play. A few of us seen the team but we didn’t really believe it.

"We know that in an Old Firm you can never trust anything that comes out.

"One day someone is injured and the next they’re playing. Listen, every player wants to play in an Old Firm.

"Whether they are injured or not they’ll try and get through it, so we went into the game thinking Jullien and Edouard would play.

"Truthfully, I got on a coach and I had a message from one of my best mates down south who plays for Doncaster and he said Welsh was playing and Edouard isn’t playing. I said ‘Yeah good one, we’ll see when we get there’.

"Obviously when we got there, the team was true but I don’t know how he knew playing down south but he was the only person who text me."
