Rangers' Europa League clash thrown into doubt as UEFA medical chief admits complications

The second leg of Rangers' Europa League clash with Bayer Leverkusen looks unlikely to go ahead after comments made by UEFA's medical chief.

Steven Gerrard's men were beaten 3-1 in the first leg at Ibrox shortly before the coronavirus crisis forced football to shutdown.

The second leg was due to take place at the BayArena and UEFA had been optimistic they could get the games played this summer, with August 6 a potential date for Rangers' trip to Germany.

But Professor Tim Meyer, UEFA's medical committee chairman, accepts there could be just too many obstacles for the second leg to go ahead.

He said: "It would be extremely complicated to play European games because of travel restrictions mostly.

"All teams would need special permits. In addition, I would assume different countries have their own epidemiological arrangements and perhaps also different legal guidance.

"It would be more difficult to play in certain countries than in others. It would prove to be a significant challenge.

"The only positive is, in terms of playing the games, is that we have more time to seek a solution in planning them than we do for league matches.

"We will have to wait and see how this develops."
