Rangers 'enter race' for Ivan Lepinjica as fledgling Croatian follows a familiar pattern

Rangers are said to be interested in Rijeka midfielder Ivan Lepinjica, according to Croatian media.

A report from Sportse Novotsk claims Steven Gerrard is one of a number of managers looking to sign the Croatian Under-21 cap.

At 21, Lepinjica is just breaking through into the first team at his club and was largely unused towards the tail end of last season.

But his pedigree is strong and Rangers like to operate in the market of the Balkan country with left-back Borna Barisic a roaring success since signing from Osijek.

Nikola Katic, too, could be considered a solid signing in defence despite his unfortunate injury woes that saw him miss the entirety of last season.

On the other hand Eros Grezda failed to impress but it shows Gerrard likes to test those waters.

Any deal for the 6 foot 3 defensive midfielder is likely to be a loan with an option to buy at the end of it.

And it's yet another young midfielder from a foreign background linked with the Ibrox club.

Joey Veerman of SC Heerenveen and out-of-contract Koln star Salih Ozcan have both been reported as potential Gers targets in recent weeks.
