Rangers draw Lincoln Red Imps in Europa League as Gibraltarian minnows aim for Celtic shock repeat

Rangers will face Lincoln Red Imps in the second round of Europa League qualifying.

The tie will be played on Thursday, September 17 in Gibraltar.

The Imps need no introduction after they famously defeated Celtic in 2016.

The 1-0 victory in Brendan Rodgers' first game as Hoops boss was turned around in the second leg in Glasgow with a routine 3-0 win but Steven Gerrard's men will have no such margin for error.

They will have to face their opponents on the plastic pitch at the 2000 capacity Victoria Stadium which caused their bitter rivals so many problems.

Rangers have had experience of the ground when they defeated St Joseph's just over a year ago in the same competition.

All of the sides in the Rock's top flight share the stadium.

They finished third in their 12 team National League after it was brought to a premature end by coronavirus.

Both sides will go into the draw for the third round hosted by UEFA on Tuesday.

LINCOLN RED IMPS PROFILE

FOUNDED: 1976.

MANAGER: William Amaral de Andrade. Brazilian defender who made over 100 appearances for Benfica. He's managed in the Portuguese lower leagues and at Gibraltar rivals Mons Calpe.

HONOURS: 24 Gibraltar league titles, 17 Gibraltar Cups.

STAR MAN: Sunday Emmanuel. The striker has won four caps for Nigeria in a nomadic career that's seen him play for clubs in Portugal, Austria and Vietnam.

INTERESTING FACT:  Lincoln Red Imps were the first ever club from Gibraltar to play in European competition and got a 1-1 draw when they played HB from the Faroe Islands before losing the return leg. Famously beat Celtic in Brendan Rodgers' first game four years ago.
