Rangers dominate SFWA player of the year awards as 4 players nominated

Rangers have dominated the shortlist for the Scottish Football Writer’s player of the year award this season.

All four nominees coming from the champions with James Tavernier, Connor Goldson, Steven Davis and Allan McGregor all selected.

It’s no shock that the runaway champions are guaranteed the winner and the four Ibrox stars will now battle it out for top prize.

It’ll be the first time in 11 years that Rangers have had a player win the award with David Weir the last to do it in 2011.

Since then, Celtic have won nine out of 10 awards with the other going to Leigh Griffiths when he was at Hibs.

Tavernier has netted an incredible 18 goals this season from right back while also being part of a strong defence alongside Goldson and McGregor.

Veteran Davis has been a class act in the middle of the park and been a key figure in the title win.

Rangers also have Nathan Patterson up for the young player of the year award, while Steven Gerrard is favourite for the manager of the year award.

Patterson is up against Celtic’s David Turnbull, Hibs defender Josh Doig and Aberdeen’s Lewis Ferguson for his award.

Gerrard faces stiff competition from Scotland manager Steve Clarke, St Johnstone boss Calum Davidson and Livingston’s David Martindale.
