Rangers' Darvish always looking for fixes, not tinkering

DETROIT _ Yu Darvish doesn't consider himself to be a tinkerer, even though he is always tweaking something between his starts for the Texas Rangers.

It might be mechanical or extra work with a certain pitch or both.

But he's not just making changes for change's sake.

"I don't think it's tinkering because this is what I do," Darvish said, before showing his sense of humor. "And that's why I'm the best pitcher."

Darvish (4-2) is scheduled to start Sunday night in the finale of a three-game series at Comerica Park. His 2.76 ERA ranked 10th in the American League entering Saturday, his .199 opponents average was fifth, and his 61 strikeouts were fourth.

That might not be the best, but it's awfully close.

Maybe he wasn't kidding.

"I have been very pleased and impressed with what Yu's been able to do," Rangers manager Jeff Banister said. "His mindset. His competitive edge. I've been more impressed with how he approaches each game and the different manner in which he pitches. It's been a little bit different each outing based on his game plan and how he feels."
