Rangers Covid trio cleared to face Celtic as appeal date set for after Scottish Cup clash

Rangers will be able to call upon the three players hit with bans for Covid-19 breaches in their clash with Celtic after the SFA set a date for their appeal.

Nathan Patterson, Calvin Bassey and Bongani Zungu will all be available for selection next weekend with the hearing to take place on April 20.

That's three days after the cup tie takes place, meaning Steven Gerrard will be allowed to play them.

Youth pair Dapo Mebude and Brian Kinnear are also part of the group who were given four game bans with a further two suspended, and will be able to play for their loan clubs while the appeal is heard.

It's a huge boost for Gerrard and the Rangers squad, ahead of the clash at Ibrox next weekend.

With James Tavernier still struggling with injury, Patterson has filled in at right back and put in excellent performances.

And Gerrard feels the bans were harsh, as he said: "Nathan is growing and growing. It's a shame that he's going to miss games moving forward.

"(The appeal) is something we're still discussing at the moment. We're in talks with the SFA over a date.

"The reason for the appeal is we think it's harsh in terms of what went on on the night.

"I think everyone assumes because of what happened with Jordan Jones and George Edmundson that everything is the same, which isn't the case.

"We don't think everything has been taken into consideration when you are talking about the boys in terms of age and how damaging it could be for them in their careers moving forward now.

"You're talking about one of the brightest prospects ever in terms of right-back. This kid is going to go and play for Scotland and all of a sudden the SFA wants to ban him for that long. I don't get it."
