Rangers confirm Marseille and Blackburn will visit Ibrox as part of glamour pre-season friendly schedule

Rangers will take on Andre Villas-Boas' Marseille in a glamour friendly at Ibrox next month as Steven Gerrard steps up preparations for the new season.

The French giants will visit Glasgow on Sunday, July 14, as one of three warm-up matches announced ahead of the new season.

Rangers first friendly comes against League One side Oxford United at Ibrox on Sunday, July 7, the week leading up to their first Europa League qualifier.

Marseille then visit Govan seven days later before Tony Mowbray's Blackburn Rovers arrive for the third and final friendly on Sunday, July 21.

Villas-Boas was only confirmed as Marseille boss last week and one of his first matches in charge will come against the Light Blues at Ibrox.

Among the cast of stars at his disposal are Italian enigma Mario Balotelli, former West Ham midfielder Dimitri Payet and Dutch international midfielder Kevin Strootman.

The two sides last met in a pre-season clash two years ago when Niko Kranjcar crashed home a stunning free kick for the Gers in a 1-1 draw.

Most famously the Ligue 1 giants and Rangers clashed in the memorable Champions League campaign of 1992/93.

A thrilling 2-2 draw at Ibrox in November was followed by another draw, 1-1, at the Stade Velodrome in April. Raymond Goethals’ men progressed beating Rangers by a single point to top the group and went on to beat AC Milan and lift the trophy in Munich.

However Marseille were later stripped of titles as part of a huge French football bribery scandal.

Former Celtic defender Charlie Mulgrew is likely to be among the Blackburn squad heading to Ibrox.
