Rangers confirm Ibrox disaster memorial tributes and ask supporters for their suggestions ahead of 50th anniversary

Rangers have confirmed plans to mark the 50th anniversary of the Ibrox disaster ahead of facing Celtic in January.

The club pays its respects every year by laying a wreath outside the Ibrox memorial and observing a minute’s silence prior to kick-off.

The John Greig statue features the names of 66 fans who sadly died on January 2 1971 when a crush occurred at stairway 13 after Colin Stein netted a late equaliser for Rangers against their oldest rivals.

2021 marks 50 years since the disaster, which at the time was the worst to have occurred at a match in Britain until the tragic events of Hillsborough in April 1989.

The coronavirus pandemic means it’s unclear whether any fans will be in attendance, and that Rangers can’t confirm exactly what they have planned for the anniversary.

But additional tributes will take place at Ibrox on 2 January.

All supporters with a personal connection to the tragedy have been asked to contact the club with their suggestions as well.

A statement read: "As part of the club’s planning and preparations, we would like to invite anyone who has a personal connection with the anniversary to contact the club via alwaysremembered@rangers.co.uk.

"It is incredibly important that we involve and reflect the wishes of families who lost loved ones on that day which is why we have created a dedicated channel of communication for people to use.

"If email is not your preferred method of contact, please contact 0141 580 8670 or you can write to Always Remembered, Ibrox Stadium, 150 Edmiston Drive, G51 2XD. All forms of contact will be treated with the utmost sensitivity and discretion.

"At it’s time, the 1971 Ibrox Disaster was the worst disaster in British sport and the effects of the disaster profoundly impacted not only Rangers, but Glasgow, Scotland and society as a whole.

"The memory of the supporters who passed away in 1971, plus the supporters who passed away in earlier Ibrox tragedies, have a special place in the club’s history and on the 50th anniversary of the 1971 disaster, we will come together to remember their lives and legacy."
