Rangers Colt teams frustration explained as Stewart Robertson questions SFA hold up over Lowland League plans

Rangers managing director Stewart Robertson has bemoaned the SFA for holding up their plans to introduce B teams into the Lowland League.

It emerged this week that Rangers and Celtic have put forward plans to move their colt teams into the regional fifth tier of Scottish football.

The proposal is for a one-year agreement that would void the B-teams positions at the end of the season - meaning they cannot be promoted or relegated.

It has garnered some support among Lowland League clubs who welcome the financial and commercial benefits that would come with the addition of Rangers and Celtic B.

It comes after plans to move colt teams straight into the senior leagues were torpedoed earlier this year when League Two clubs voted down the idea out of fear it would devalue the competition.

Speaking to Rangers TV, Robertson explained: "There's been a lot said about B teams over the past few months which is false. It's nonsense.

"We've been frustrated about the lack of a transition pathway for our young players, so this is something we've spent a lot of time on.

"After all the nonsense that happened last summer, with the end of the league, we undertook to consult with every club in the SPFL.

"Only three clubs didn't meet us, and they were lower league clubs. But we had good discussions with almost every single club just to understand what their frustrations were within the game, and what they would like to see changed.

"We presented them with a paper that talks about various things that we could do to make the game better.

"That's what it's all about: making the game better and improving player development.

"Part of that is for the bigger clubs to have B teams so that we're in control of our players' destiny."

Robertson went on to reveal Rangers took the concerns raised in meetings on board, and took them into consideration as they put together a revised proposal.

But he says the SFA are yet to give that out to clubs, which has jeopardised their plans to start from next season.

"We took ideas from various clubs and we then rewrote the paper," Robertson continued.

"We presented it to the Professional Game Board (PGB), and we felt that with everything that had happened as a result of Covid, this would have been a great time to make some changes to the game.

"Let's go and improve the quality of the players to come out of Scottish football.

"We had frustration after frustration after frustration. It was approved by the PGB and the SPFL, but it then got to the SFA board and it slowed down.

"We wanted it to be implemented next year, but that paper has still not gone to the clubs.

"Despite us trying to make it and SFA and an SPFL idea, rather than a Rangers and Celtic idea, it's still not been given to the clubs.

"You need to ask the SFA and the SPFL why."
