Rangers close in on European and world records as Steven Gerrard's men look to extend incredible clean sheet start

Diligent Rangers are close to topping many European records for starting the season without losing a goal and three games away from equalling the world record.

And the record could be broken in an epic derby against Celtic on October 17.

The Ibrox side broke a 114-year Scottish record at the weekend when they cruised to a 4-0 win over Dundee United to make it six clean sheets in the league.

They have broken the English record now after Chelsea went the first six matches of their season in 2005 without conceding before Aston Villa’s Luke Moore scored 44 minutes into their seventh Premier League game of the campaign.

Elsewhere in Europe, the Spanish record is held by Barcelona, who went the first eight matches of the season in 2014 without conceding before Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo scored from the penalty spot 36 minutes into El Clasico.

In Germany, that feat was matched, surprisingly perhaps, by Stuttgart 17 years ago who also went eight games at the start of the season without losing a goal.

Latvia's Skonto Riga also started their season in 1997 with eight clean sheets also.

The European record is held by the famous Ajax side of 1994/95 with Edwin van der Sar in goal and Louis van Gaal as manager. They started their Eredivisie season by going nine games without conceding before losing a goal on their tenth match of the season at De Kuip against Feyenoord.

But the world record is held by the Tunisian side Esperance and was created 20 years ago. The African side began their domestic season with 10 clean sheets before they conceded to US Monastir.

Rangers' next three league games are against Hibs, Motherwell and Ross County. And they would break the world record against the Hoops if they continue their run without conceding.
