Rangers' clash with Legia Warsaw halted as Ibrox engulfed in smoke by away fans' pyro display

Rangers' clash with Legia Warsaw was suspended after away fans engulfed Ibrox in smoke by letting off flares.

The tie was locked at 0-0 in the second half when the referee was forced to call a temporary halt.

Supporters created an intimidating display to plunge the stadium under a haze, with TV cameras then unable to see the pitch.

After the smoke had cleared, the game restarted with the flares extinguished.

The incident is likely to land Legia in trouble with UEFA, who take a dim view on such displays.

The Polish support had earlier unveiled a huge banner depicting Pope John Paul II.

Underneath the banner, the words "Be Not Afraid" were emblazoned across the away section.

The move comes just days after Rangers were hit with sanctions from UEFA for  sectarianism .

The Ibrox side have been pleading with their fans to cut out the offensive singing to avoid any more repercussions from European football's governing body.

Rangers were ordered to close off 3000 seats from the stadium on Thursday night after UEFA ruled some fans were guilty of sectarian singing in the   Europa League  qualifying win over St Joseph's back in July.

And on Wednesday the club announced they will refuse tickets for their next European away match due to concerns over fan behaviour.
