NARATHIWAT: A team of rangers clashed with a group of armed insurgents in Chanae district of this southern province on Sunday morning. There were no casualties.

The exchange of fire, which lasted about 30 minutes, occurred at about 7.30am at a campground with two tents near Ban Chue-ko in tambon Dusongyo. The insurgents, believed to be led by Isma-ae Manu, retreated into the jungle, leaving behind a pistol, hammocks, backpacks and food supplies.

The clash took place about 10 kilometres from Ban Lalo in Rueso district where rangers of the 46th Ranger Regiment clashed with a number of insurgents on Saturday.

In the Saturday clash, a Muslim insurgent identified as Mahama Bula was killed. The rangers seized an M16 rifle, some bomb-making equipment and a quantity of survival gear. Some insurgents were believed to have been wounded in the firefight.

Three teams of rangers from the 11th, 45th and 46th Ranger Regiments were subsequently deployed to hunt for the insurgents, leading to the clash on Sunday morning.
