Rangers Cinch row set for SFA intervention as SPFL call in the cavalry to keep sponsors happy

The SPFL have asked the SFA to intervene in their row with Rangers a desperate bid to keep Cinch from withdrawing their sponsorship deal.

The defending champions sparked fury from the league's governing body when they refused to advertise title sponsor Cinch in their opening Premiership clash with Livingston.

Car dealer Cinch penned a record deal with the SPFL worth around £1.6m per season but Rangers argue that they don't have to honour aspects of the contract if they will negatively impact their own pre-existing sponsorship deals.

That stance has been slammed by SPFL chief Murdoch MacLennan and the row between Rangers and the governing body has rumbled on.

They didn't wear Cinch branding on their kit for their trip to Tannadice while all 41 of the other SPFL clubs did.

It's led to fears that the sponsor could pull out since one of the biggest clubs in the country is refusing to promote their brand.

And now The Mail report that the SPFL have called in the SFA to mediate the row and hopefully reach a resolution.

They want to resolve the situation before it has a negative impact on the rest of Scottish football's finances.

Many clubs are already on the ropes after 18 months without fans and are just now being allowed to reopen their turnstiles with minimal restrictions.

Rangers however are citing rule L7 within the SPFL regulations which states that clubs do not have to comply with rules which "conflict with pre-existing contractual obligations."

The SPFL feel that legal argument does not hold up and it will now be down to the SFA to find a middle ground.
