Rangers, Celtic and Chelsea kids pushing for Scotland starts, admits John Carver

John Carver admits Scotland’s talented youngsters are pushing for starting places in Steve Clake’s team for EURO 2020.

Carver believes Scotland have benefited from the tournament being pushed back a year as it’s allowed some of the future generation to impact the squad.

There have been strong calls for Rangers’ Nathan Patterson and Chelsea’s Billy Gilmour to start against Czech Republic on Monday.

Lanarkshire duo David Turnbull, from Wishaw, and Kevin Nisbet, from Cambuslang, are part of a group of players that might have missed out on the squad last summer but Carver admits they’re knocking on the door for a starting berth.

He said: “I think it’s helped us. You just look at the three young guys who’ve come in; Billy [Gilmour], Nathan [Patterson] and David Turnbull.

“They’ve added quality to the squad. When they joined the group, everybody thought that he [Steve Clarke] was just bringing them in for experience.

Nisbet scored his first international goal against Holland (SNS Group)

“But let me tell you, these guys have put pressure on some of the older, experienced guys that have been around it for a long time.

“That period of time has helped us, definitely.

"You look at Kevin Nisbet who has come from nowhere really and you look at the goal he scored against Holland and it was an excellent finish.”
