Rangers caught up in bizarre transfer row as Rapid Vienna blast 'unprofessional' agent behaviour

Rangers have been caught up in a bizarre row between Rapid Vienna and their striker Taxiarchis Fountas.

The Greek international scored 19 goals for Rapid Vienna last season and now the Austrian club have been enraged by the player's agents.

His form led to speculation a host of Serie A teams were lining up a £3million move for the 24-year-old.

But Rapid were infuriated after his agent appeared to offer the player for sale on one of their social media pages and posted badges of Rangers, Sampdoria and Atalanta next to Fountas while claiming these were the clubs who had made offers for him.

Steven Gerrard already has Alfredo Morelos, Jermain Defoe and summer signings Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten and is highly unlikely to sign another frontman.

Rapid Vienna sports director, Zoran Barisic, said: "This has made us really angry. It's actually very upsetting for us and the player.

"This is the height of unprofessional behaviour from his agents. We are not in a bazaar.

"They are aggressively trying to sell him when there hasn't been a single offer for him.

"A good agent works in the background and when there is something concrete, informs the club. This is disgraceful."

But Fountas' agents, MK Sports Consultants, stated: "In no way did we offer our player for sale.

"We only posted the clubs who were interested according to a report in an Italian newspaper."
