Rangers captaincy change idea floated by former player

Michael Beale should consider changing the Rangers captaincy.

That's according to former Gers player Bob Malcolm.

James Tavernier has been the skipper of the club since Lee Wallace's departure several years ago.

He's come in for some hefty criticism during that time from supporters.

Connor Goldson is currently the vice-captain of the club and clearly has strong leadership qualities with his organisation at the back.

And Malcolm reckons the 30-year-old may be a more natural choice for the role.

He told the Scottish Sun: "Goldson is Rangers' best defender by a country mile. I know Tav leads the team out every week but Goldson is the real skipper. He is the one who organises and does most of the talking.

"If Michael Beale made Goldson skipper then it would maybe take the pressure off Tav. I know that would prove problematic and I don't think it will happen for a number of reasons.

"However, I genuinely believe it would help Rangers out defensively in the long term. Still, you shouldn't need to wear the armband to be a captain. At a club like Rangers, there should always be four or five on-field leaders.

"Goldson is the main one and everybody looks a lot more comfortable when he is on the pitch. Of course he makes mistakes, as does any defender in the world.

"But he makes fewer of them than the other centre-halves at the club. The one thing I like about him is that it doesn't affect him if he does make an error.

"He has a strong enough mentality to shrug it off and just get on with the game. And I know that is a lot easier said than done."
