Rangers callers disgusted as John Needham's apology not enough for fuming fans - Hotline

St Mirren chairman John Needham has apologised to Rangers and their supporters over offensive tweets but the Ibrox fans contacting the Hotline say the Buddies chief can go whistle.

Anti-sectarianism charity Nil By Mouth have condemned the social media posts while the SFA are set to take action.

Frank McFerran, Carrickfergus, said: “I think John Needham has a problem of large proportions, he says these things then thinks an apology is enough. He shouldn’t be in football or business with those attitudes.”

Colin Hall, Carrickfergus, added: “Does St Mirren chairman John Needham really think that a grovelling apology to Rangers will ‘cut it’ with the masses of Rangers fans he dissed? I don’t think so.”

And David Spiers emailed to say: “I think it’s disgusting that St Mirren chairman John Needham is still in his job after the uncovering of offensive tweets sent by him aimed at Rangers and it’s supporters.

“He said it does not reflect his character but it obviously does as he tweeted them in the first place. He should be held to account for the offensiveness of these remarks.”

Drew Ferguson, Oban, said: “The Health Minister Humza Yousaf stated that if Rangers players were found to be singing sectarian songs then they should be sacked. Following Mr Needham’s comments should he not follow suit due to his clearly sectarian comments?”

Back to matters on the pitch.

Alfredo Morelos joined the Rangers 100 club on Sunday but Gordon Ashley, Ayr, isn’t impressed.

The Hotline regular said: “People saying Alfredo Morelo s is the best striker here for the last four years have already been proved wrong. He doesn’t have the pace or skill to play in the Premier League or score against big four Euro league teams like Milan or Leipzig like Odsonne Edouard did and that’s why he’ll go for a third of the £15million - rising to £19m - fee of the Frenchman.”

Brian McColligan added: “Twenty-five percent of Morelos’s goals have come against mediocre Europa League teams, not one against a top five nation and a third have been against teams ranked over 200 in Europe. But don’t let that get in the way of a good story.”

Robert Livingstone, Palm Beach, said: “Always good to read Barry Ferguson’s contribution in the Record. His view is that Morelos is heavy set and not overweight but I tend to agree with former ibrox star Craig Moore who says he does look chunky. He was a bit lighter last season, he needs to drop a few pounds and score more regularly.”

Paul Connery, Paisley, said: “Having watched both Old Firm teams in action this weekend I am going to come out and say that I’m not overly impressed with Rangers. St Mirren started Sunday’s game very brightly and were far the better team before Rangers got the penalty award. I am very confident Ange Postecoglou and Celtic can narrow this four point gap down by the end of November.”

Gerry Milligan, Erskine, added: “If Postecoglou can become more flexible with his formations Kyogo Furuhashi and Giorgos Giakoumakis could easily operate as Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink and Scott McDonald or Tony Stokes and Gary Hooper did. He has to be more horses-for-courses in the future I feel.”

John Bruce said: “In his Sunday Mail column, Hugh Keevins said what Rangers fans have been saying for years: Aberdeen and their fans have ideas way above their station and they are NOT rivals of Rangers.

“No matter how awful the team have been playing, at Ibrox on Wednesday the Aberdeen players will be pumped up to a frenzy, urged on by their ex-Celtic captain. “They will run around the pitch like men possessed, as if their very lives depended on it, because they are playing Rangers - as usual - only to be meekly beaten by whoever they play in their next game - as usual…”
