Rangers break silence on fan ban as Ibrox club share 'immense frustration' over 500 supporter limit

Rangers have expressed their "immense frustration" after fans were locked out for their festive fixture with St Mirren.

New restrictions by the Scottish Government mean only 500 fans will be allowed inside Ibrox, around 1 per cent of capacity.

Following that fixture the Premiership will take its winter break early, with the trip to Celtic rescheduled for February 2.

Moving the break was something Rangers were against, but the champions made no public statement on the plans.

Now though they've broken their silence to express their disappointment as a ballot for season ticket holders is announced.

A statement said: "Rangers Football Club notes the recent announcement made by the First Minister, which will severely reduce the number of supporters able to access Ibrox Stadium for our Boxing Day fixture with St Mirren.

"This match will go ahead following discussions with fellow SPFL clubs in recent days.

"We share the immense frustration of our loyal fans, who would have ensured the match would have been a sell-out, however, we will now only be able to welcome a minuscule proportion of that proposed crowd to the stadium.

"A ballot will be held to ensure an extremely limited number of our season ticket holders will be able to attend the match, with those successful notified at the earliest opportunity. For those season ticket holders and hospitality clients unable to attend, the match will be shown live at no additional cost on RangersTV."

Rangers hold a six point lead at the top of the table following Celtic's 0-0 draw with St Mirren on Wednesday night.

They face losing the likes of Joe Aribo and Leon Balogun after the break, with a number of players heading off on international duty.
