Rangers brand referee 'disgusting' after he 'mocked' Jermain Defoe following injury

Rangers FC have issued a statement after a referee appeared to celebrate when Jermain Defoe was stretchered off the pitch at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

Martin Brodigan posted a picture on Twitter of the veteran player being carried off during the second half of the Rangers v Ross County game with the caption "things you love to see" alongside a smiley face emoji.

He who demanded an investigation.

Now Rangers have issued a statement.

Martin Brodigan has been blasted (Twitter)

A club spokesperson said: "To mock a footballer being carried from the pitch on a stretcher is disgusting and if this person is indeed registered with the Scottish FA we expect them to deal with him quickly and properly."

It is believed that Brodigan referees amateur kids' games across Scotland.

According to Brodigan's Twitter profile he is a native of Ireland who has been living in Scotland since 1996.

The post started a Twitter row (Twitter)

The offending tweet and his profile were deleted a short time later but not before attracting angry comments from football fans.

Ian Turner added: "Ridiculous. No doubt he will be moaning about a lack of respect from players/officials at some stage as well."

And posting as Every Other Saturday, another critic pointed out: "It seems he’s deleted his Twitter, perhaps wishing injury on a professional footballer wasn’t the smartest idea from an SFA referee."

Fortunately Defoe's calf injury isn't as bad as first thought, although he is likely to be out for up to four weeks.

Rangers went on to win the match 2-0.
