Rangers boss Steven Gerrard turns down Bristol City head coach job

Former Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has turned down the opportunity to become the next head coach at Bristol City.

The Robins were keen on Gerrard, Bristol Live understands, but the former international midfielder has declined to pursue the interest.

England's fourth most capped player wants to remain at Ibrox Stadium to continue his coaching career and is said to have one eye on the Liverpool hot seat in the future.

Gerrard recently signed a new contract lasting until 2024 up in Scotland and if the 40-year-old sees that through then he could be in a prime position to take over his hometown club.

The news was extensively covered by Sunday Times journalist Duncan Castles in his weekly Transfer Window podcast.

And Bristol Live understands that the transfer market guru's information is correct.

Bristol City are searching for a successor to head coach Lee Johnson and are now into a third week without an appointment.

Bristol Live had reported that Gerrard was a leading contender to take over in BS3 with the Robins hierarchy eager to make an appointment that would see someone come in who can nurture the existing talents in the South West.

Instead City will have to consider alternatives as they look to consolidate in the Championship and then go for promotion in the coming years.

Chris Hughton remains the favourite with the bookies and could offer a more experienced option to take over at Ashton Gate.

Bristol Live understands that Hughton is interested in the position.
