Rangers boss Steven Gerrard scouting England U21 players at Toulon Tournament

Steven Gerrard spent his first official day as Rangers manager watching England U21s at the Toulon Tournament.

The English kids are playing Qatar in the tournament and had a disappointing 0-0 draw with Mexico in their opening game.

Gerrard was spotted in the stands taking notes and was there to watch some of English football's brightest prospects as he looks to strengthen his Rangers team.

Aidy Boothroyd's side includes the likes of Chelsea youngster Tammy Abraham and Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny.

Abraham spent last season out on loan at Swansea, scoring five goals as the Welsh side were relegated from the English Premier League and Chelsea are likely to loan him out again this season.

Abraham is playing as part of a front three with Newcastle forward Adam Armstrong also in action.

The 21-year-old had been highly-thought of at St James Park but hasn't kicked on as hoped and is being allowed to leave this summer.

Rangers are short of options in attack with Alfredo Morelos the only real option still at the club as Eduardo Herrera looks to exit, Kenny Miller's contract is up and Jason Cummings loan deal is finished and no permanent move has been agreed yet.

That could lead to Armstrong being a player Gerrard would look at as he builds a team to challenge Celtic next season.

Former Kilmarnock and Aberdeen loanee Freddy Woodman was on the bench for England.
