Rangers boss Steven Gerrard reacts to 'pessimistic question' as boss gives James Tavernier query a rueful smile

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is determined to remain positive over James Tavernier's injury prospects.

The Ibrox captain was forced off during the first half of Thursday night's rollercoaster Europa League victory over Royal Antwerp.

Gerrard's team will take a 4-3 last 32 lead back to Ibrox for the second leg in seven days time.

The manager doesn't know whether Tavernier will recover in time but is certain the 29-year-old will "do whatever he can" to return quickly.

He reacted with a rueful smile when asked how disappointing it would be for his skipper, with a Premiership title tantalisingly close, to miss any of Rangers' upcoming big occasions.

Gerrard replied: “That’s very pessimistic question from you - I’m trying to stay optimistic. This is my captain, he has been absolutely unreal for me since I came in the door.

“I’m going to stay as positive as I can.

"We will check it out and, knowing James, he will be desperate to get back as soon as possible.

“But, it is what it is. He’s had a fantastic run in terms of injuries.

“I won’t concern myself too much until we get the news. We have a fantastic medical department who will analyse it and tell me what's what.

“I know for a fact James will do whatever he can to get back as quick as he can.

“Let’s just hope and pray the scan news is more positive than negative.”
