Rangers boss Steven Gerrard praises Motherwell for racism stand support

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has praised Motherwell and other Scottish Premiership rivals for their show of support for Ibrox midfielder Glen Kamara over the weekend.

The Steelmen and Dundee United both refused to take the knee before their Scottish Premiership clashes on Saturday after Kamara suffered alleged racist abuse during Rangers' Europa League defeat to Slavia Prague on Thursday night.

Twenty-four hours earlier Motherwell chief executive also tweeted his support, adding that clubs need to show a "stronger message."

Just before Sunday's Old Firm clash kicked-off Celtic skipper Scott Brown showed his support for Kamara by walking into the Rangers half to give his rival a supportive hug and Motherwell skipper Declan Gallagher said it was "exactly what the world and Old Firm fans needed to see."

And Gerrard says he is proud to be part of Scottish football after clubs across the country united in support of Kamara and the fight against racism.

He said: “Glen has had some fantastic support and we as a club have had fantastic support.

“The reaction from Scottish football has been brilliant.

“I saw other clubs getting involved in the last few days and making it clear they’re not accepting it and are striving to improve things.

“It’s made me really proud to be part of Scottish football, even more so than I’d been.

“I have always been proud to be part of the game up here, representing Rangers and doing this job.

“But the past few days has made me feel really, really proud given the reaction from around the country.

"It’s been fantastic.

“It feels different so credit to everyone who has played a part in that.”
