Rangers boss Steven Gerrard plays down links to Bristol City job as interviews continue

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has played down links to the Bristol City vacancy, insisting he is happy in Glasgow.

Gerrard had been among the likes of Chris Hughton, Plymouth boss Ryan Lowe and Aston Villa assistant John Terry as candidates for the job after Lee Johnson's departure.

It was previously reported by Bristol Live that Gerrard was, at one point, the leading contender for the vacancy at Ashton Gate but had indicated he wasn’t prepared to leave Ibrox.

However, the Liverpool midfielder insists there was no contact between the Robins and “his people”.

The Liverpool legend told reporters: "I am content here, I'm happy.

"My people haven't heard anything from Bristol City, so I think it's just paper talk and rumours."

Gerrard has dropped dramatically in the betting after his comments, now placed at 20/1 below the likes of Hughton and Lowe as the recruitment process behind the scenes at Ashton Gate continues.

Interviews to find Lee Johnson’s successor were talking place on Thursday and Friday with Chris Hughton among the candidates spoken to.

The former Brighton manager remains the fans favourite to take over at BS3 but the board are yet to make a decision on a long-term appointment.

Bristol Live understands Hughton is interested in the role but City are carrying out their due diligence and will not be drawn into making a quick decision over what is perhaps their most important appointment in the 21st century.

The Robins finished the Championship season in 12th, with the final five games being overseen by interim boss Dean Holden, way short of their season goal of finishing in the top six.

The new manager will be tasked with completing City's long term goal of getting the club into the Premier League with Hughton's Championship promotion experience proving popular with fans.
