Rangers boss Steven Gerrard on Jermain Defoe injury blow and the possible transfer knock-on effect

Steven Gerrard has confirmed that Jermain Defoe suffered a hamstring injury in Rangers' pre-season victory over Motherwell.

And the Ibrox boss says the club may need to intensify their search for a new striker in the transfer market as a result.

Defoe limped out of action in the second half of Rangers' 4-0 win having come on to replace Alfredo Morelos just over 20 minutes earlier.

Gerrard told Premier Sports that the injury was to the striker's hamstring, but it's too early to say how long he's going to be out for.

He said: "The only disappointment from tonight is Jermain's injury.

"[We don't know] the extent, but we know what it is. We believe it's a hamstring [injury] but until we scan it we won't know how long it's going to be and the extent."

When asked if it may result in the club ramping up their search for a new striker, Gerrard added: "Yes, possibly. First and foremost we need to stay calm and find out the extent of the injury, and how long it's going to be.

"I went on record last week to say I'd like to add in that area, in terms of the firepower, so it might push us even more in that direction to get something done."

Rangers were comfortable winners in the match thanks to goals from Ryan Kent, Ianis Hagi, Joe Aribo and a Rickie Lamie own goal.
