Rangers boss Steven Gerrard on how he's being forced to give the game away ahead of Europa League clash

Steven Gerrard admits he's being forced to give the game away over his Europa League team selection.

The Rangers boss takes his side to Gibraltar on Tuesday to face minnows St Joseph's in qualifying after the fixture was brought forward two days from Thursday.

The crucial clash now follows hot on the heels of the Ibrox friendly against Oxford United later on Sunday.

It's presented Gerrard with a delicate balancing act where he admits he'll have to protect certain players ahead of the Euro opener.

He plans to play two different sides against Oxford that will at least provide a strong hint over who will get the nod in midweek.

He told Rangers TV : "Our situation has changed a lot.

"The idea would have been to play two 45 minutes but now I've got to protect certain people who are in the frame to start on Tuesda night.

"So, unfortunately I'm going to have to give certain things away with how I got about it against Oxford.

"It's not ideal but you have to adapt and move on. What I don't want people to do is think when I play a certain situation (against Oxford) that's going to be my starting XI - because it won't be.

"If people want to guess that way there's nothing I can do about it. But the idea will be to play a 60 minute XI then I'll change it to a second XI for the last 30 minutes, with an idea to keep certain people fresh for Tuesday night."
