Rangers boss Steven Gerrard insists Premiership must continue as he rubbishes null-and-void calls

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard insists the Scottish Premiership must be played to a finish to secure the integrity of the competition.

With League One and League Two suspended until the end of January in a bid to overcome the coronavirus pandemic, there has been suggestions that the top two divisions could follow suit.

Neil Doncaster refused to rule out the possibility of null-and-void with the SPFL chief saying it's down to the clubs to decide what happens if the leagues are stopped.

When that happened last year, Celtic were awarded the title on a points per game basis but Gerrard wants the competition to be completed this time around.

That was the opinion he gave last year when the leagues were being called and he reiterated it again as he looks to guide Rangers to the Premiership title.

The Ibrox side currently sit 21 points clear of rivals Celtic and Gerrard told Sky Sports: "I’ve read through the interview and I think what Neil has done is put every possibility and option on the table. My opinion on this is exactly the same as it was in March and April.

"For football’s sake and the sake of competition, everything has to be tried and finished in the right way. That’s not me saying this now because we’re sitting where we are in terms of the competition this year because my opinion was exactly the same in March and April.

"That’s my hope, that’s what I want and my opinion will never change as long as I’m involved in the game.

"It would have been my opinion at 18 years of age and it’ll be my opinion at 88.

"Football is played for a reason and it’s because you have to finish competitions."
